Pheasant Capital of the World© Welcomes Hunters for the 2026 Season

The leaves are turning, there’s a crispness in the air, and the South Dakota Pheasant Opener is just a few short weeks away!

Non-resident outdoor enthusiasts will be arriving in their blaze orange to celebrate the kick-off of the 2026 pheasant hunting season on October 17th.

For generations, some things have remained constant about this season, and that is the comradery spirit that hunters share. And Redfield is proud to honor that heritage and a long legacy of pheasant hunting that began over a century ago.  

“The upcoming season will really pay homage to that heritage and is anticipated to produce fantastic bird numbers,” said Redfield Area Chamber of Commerce director Kim Leonhardt.

Despite the dry weather conditions over the summer, expectations remain high that this will be yet another phenomenal season for pheasant hunting. 

A Heritage Over 115 Years in the Making

Redfield became known as the Pheasant Capital of the World © following the release of three Chinese ringneck pheasants in Spink County back in 1908. It was the first successful introduction of the birds to South Dakota.

Inspired by the triumph, the South Dakota Game and Fish Department (as it was known then) went on to release more pheasants in 1911. By 1917, the pheasant population was booming. So much so that two years later, officials decided to host the first one-day pheasant hunt in 1919.

Within 15 years, every county in the state would be hosting pheasant hunting. In 1943, the South Dakota State Legislature declared the ring-neck pheasant as the official state bird.

The hunting traditions of the past 100 years have also had a significant impact on the state’s economy.

How much of an impact? Estimates peg pheasant hunting as having generated a whopping $281 million in revenue, thanks to residents and visitors purchasing licenses, food, lodging, and fuel throughout the season.

Annual Tailfeather Contest Earns You Bragging Rights and Swag!

Redfield will also be hosting the annual tailfeather contest.  

“This event brings a competitive opportunity for hunters to earn some bragging rights and Redfield swag,” said Leonhardt. “Anyone interested can simply register their longest tailfeather at ACE Hardware for a chance to win!”

Winners will be announced weekly. At the end of the hunting season, all of the weekly winners will then have a chance at the grand prize.
