Kim Leonhardt Appointed New Chamber/Tourism Director in Redfield, South Dakota

November 18, 2024

The City of Redfield. is pleased to welcome Kim Leonhardt as the new Chamber/Tourism Director for Redfield, South Dakota. With over two decades of experience in tourism and hospitality, Kim is well-prepared to support the growth of Redfield and Spink County. She is passionate about fostering community connections and enhancing local tourism and is eager to bring fresh energy and strategic initiatives to her new role. Originally from Minnesota, Kim and her family have made South Dakota their home since 2020. After operating a year-round fishing resort for 19 years in Minnesota, they now manage a seasonal hunting lodge and guide service in South Dakota. Reflecting on her career, Kim emphasizes the importance of networking and building business relationships: "In my 24 years of experience in tourism, one of the most effective tools has been making connections."

Building a Collaborative Community

One of Kim's primary goals is to create a cohesive community where local businesses can collaborate and thrive. She envisions establishing a strong referral network that encourages companies to support each other and motivates tourists to explore Redfield and Spink County more. "Using referral methods is critically important to keep tourists in our area," she notes. Additionally, Kim believes in educating residents about the advantages of shopping locally, suggesting that a personalized local shopping experience can foster a more profound connection than online alternatives, ultimately strengthening the local economy. Kim has already begun enhancing communication and cooperation across Redfield. She has initiated group email lists for businesses within similar sectors and has toured various companies to understand their unique offerings better. "These characteristics will serve as key marketing points for tourism opportunities, attracting new customers and potentially drawing new residents to the community," she explains. To gain further insights, Kim plans to distribute a business survey to prioritize understanding the needs of local businesses.

Upcoming Initiatives for Tourism Growth

Kim has ambitious plans to promote Redfield as a travel destination. Recognizing the town's identity as the "Pheasant Capital of the World," she sees significant potential to attract outdoor enthusiasts and tourists. One of her upcoming projects involves adding digital signage at the town entrances—an initiative combining grant funding with local fundraising efforts. These signs will provide high-visibility announcements about community events, local attractions, and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. "The digital signage will increase awareness of upcoming events and activities, encouraging long-time residents to remain active in the community," Kim explains. In addition to digital signage, Kim aims to promote family-friendly events that appeal to residents and visitors of all ages. She intends to enhance Redfield's social media presence and expand partnerships with neighboring communities to boost regional tourism. By highlighting Redfield's recreational activities, scenic beauty, and welcoming atmosphere, she hopes to attract more tourists, support local businesses, and create a vibrant community.

With Kim Leonhardt at the forefront of Redfield’s tourism and business development, exciting changes are on the horizon. Her dedication to creating a collaborative business community and her enthusiasm for showcasing Redfield’s unique qualities are sure to make an impact. Grow Spink looks forward to further partnering with the Chamber on future projects and events to enhance the region's economic development and community engagement.
