Bolstering Our Workforce

Attracting and retaining skilled labor is one of the key challenges faced by rural communities today. Continued economic growth relies on access to a pool of skilled workers.
South Dakota WINS (SDWINS) is an innovative and collaborative workforce development program that started in 2012. It brings partners from government, education and business together to strengthen the state’s workforce.
Through this initiative, the state is working to attract newcomers through the Dakota Roots program, which connects job seekers from out of state with local career opportunities.
SDWINS is also emphasizing high school career and academic planning. This includes internships with area businesses and career camps to help expose youth to in-demand career fields. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness that there are jobs and great quality of life in rural South Dakota to entice them to stay or return after completing college or training.
